Where it comes from
TINGKAT is part of STRATA, a collection about layers. Tingkat means level or storey, and the lamp is literally a stack of them, each one a tray set on a lit core, with the light escaping where the layers meet.
Making factEvery tier is printed upside down as a tray, with no supports, then slid onto the frosted core.
The form
Square trays of different sizes stacked on a frosted square core. The gaps between the trays let a line of light out on all four sides, and the top tray carries a glowing square. Seen from the front it is symmetrical; seen from a corner the steps become a diagonal.
In the room
The light comes out sideways in thin bands, so TINGKAT is a mood lamp more than a reading lamp. It looks right on a console against a wall, where the bands land on the surface behind it.
How it's made
Each tier is a tray, printed upside down without supports, then slid onto a frosted 80 mm square core, so nothing floats. The mains parts (cord, switch, lampholder and bulb) are bought-in electrical parts, never printed.
TINGKAT started as a sketch of stacked trays and stayed that way. I like that you can see exactly how it is put together. — Fakhrul
