MERDEKA: Lamps from Malaysian Modernist Architecture

MERDEKA is a collection of three lamps drawn from the architecture of the years around 1957, when Malaysia built its new public buildings in concrete, fins and screens. The vertical fins that shade Parliament House in Kuala Lumpur, the sun-breaker louvres on schools and offices, and the breeze block, the blok angin set into the walls of terrace houses across the country, were all made to manage light and air in a hot climate. These lamps borrow that geometry and turn it around: instead of keeping the sun out, they let a bulb's light out in patterns.

About the collection

The culture is in the source, not on the surface. You won't find a flag, a motif or a pattern copied from a building. What you get is the logic of those buildings, abstracted until each piece reads as a pure object: a cube of diamond cells, a cylinder of fins, a tower of slats. All three are bone white, so the form and the shadow do the work.

ANGIN is the cordless one, a breeze-block cube that throws its grid onto the wall behind it. SIRIP is a ring of 24 fins around a glowing core. BIDAI is a louvred tower whose slats hide the bulb and pool the light on the table.

The name BAYANG means shadow, and this is the collection that explains it best. Switch one on against a plain wall at night and you'll see why.
