STRATA: Layered Lamps with Light Between the Lines

STRATA is a collection of three lamps about layers. Its sources are the things that show time and height as bands: a geological core sample drawn out of the ground, the contour lines on a survey map, and stacked storeys. It is also an honest nod to how the lamps are made, one thin layer at a time, though the lamps are about the form, not the machine.

About the collection

In every STRATA lamp the light comes out where the layers meet. TERAS, the cordless one, is a small cylinder of uneven bands with thin glowing lines between them, like a core sample lit from inside. KONTUR stacks 34 contour rings on a thin shell, so the lamp reads as a topographic model of a hill drawn in lines of light. TINGKAT is an hourglass of square tiers set on a frosted core, with a slot of light between every tier and a lit square on top.

KONTUR's outline is generated by code from a seed number, so each lamp can be unique, with a shape of its own. That idea, a design drawn by a script and chosen by hand, is the most direct link between this collection and its maker, a software developer.

STRATA is bone white throughout. It suits rooms where you want a lamp to be mostly shape: a console, a sideboard, a dressing table, a bedside. The light it gives is low and banded, more mood than task.
