INSTRUMENT: Graphite Lamps Made Like Equipment

INSTRUMENT is a collection of three lamps that treat light as equipment. The sources are the objects on a lab bench and in a hi-fi rack: knurled knobs, tick marks, heat sinks, speaker grilles and dot-matrix displays. Each lamp has a graphite body, light only where it does work, and a model number, the way a piece of test gear would.

About the collection

It is the most personal of the four collections. BAYANG is made by Fakhrul Fahmi, a software developer who builds his own tools, including the slicer that prepares every lamp for the printer. INSTRUMENT is where that side of the brand shows most: objects that tell you how they work by looking at them, with one signal-lime tick as the only colour.

DIAL (D-01) is the cordless one, a knurled puck whose ring of 36 ticks is the dimmer. COLUMN (C-02) stacks 25 graphite rings like a heat sink, with a window down the front showing the lit core. MATRIX (M-03) is a slim cabinet whose front is a 10 × 14 grid of square cells; switched off it could be a speaker, switched on it is a display.

There is no cultural thread here and we don't pretend otherwise. These are lamps for desks, studios and shelves, for people who like their objects precise, dark and a little technical, and who want the light to arrive the moment they turn something on.

Yes, when it is made and used right: LED only, ready-made electrics and a shade kept away from heat. What makes a printed lamp safe, and what to check.
