WARISAN: The Gasing, the Lampu Pam and the Tudung Saji

Our heritage collection holds its sources literally. Here is why we chose these three objects, and how we drew them.

Our other collections abstract their sources until they are pure geometry. WARISAN doesn't. Warisan means heritage, and these three lamps are objects you can name from across the room: a spinning top, a pressure lantern and a woven food cover.

Why these three

Malaysian heritage lamps already exist, and some of the subjects are well covered by other makers. We chose objects that hadn't been made into lamps, and that already belong around light and gathering: the games, the night market and the dining table.

How we draw them

Clean geometry and flat colour: brass, red, bone and wood tones. No imitation of wear, rust or handcraft texture. The point is not to reproduce an antique, but to make an everyday object from Malaysian homes into something you would put on a table and switch on.

GASING

The gasing, the Malaysian spinning top, played and competed in across the peninsula. Ours sits point-down in a graphite dock with a conical socket, so it rests on a ring and never on its point. The crown glows between two red bands, above a steel-grey rim and a wood-toned cone. It is cordless and charges through the dock.

PAM

The lampu pam, the brass pressure lantern that lit the pasar malam and the kampung kenduri before electricity reached everywhere. PAM keeps the tank with its gauge and pump knob, the frosted chimney behind eight guard bars, the hood, the vent cap and the carry handle, and leaves out the kerosene. An E14 LED globe sits inside the chimney.

TUDUNG

The tudung saji, the woven food cover of the Malaysian dining table, on a brass dulang tray. TUDUNG was the first of our twelve lamps to go from concept to a real, printable model. The first concept was too tall and had a visible bend in its curve; the model you can order is lower and rounder, with a curve that has no bend line at all. Two spirals of 24 ribs cross into diamonds, the dome twists off the tray at the red band, and the light is a low-voltage 5 V LED.

A seasonal line

WARISAN is made for gathering: Raya open houses, kenduri, weddings, the dining table. It sits beside our other collections as a heritage line rather than the whole of what BAYANG is.
