Where it comes from
DIAL comes from lab instruments and hi-fi: knurled knobs, tick marks, model numbers (this one is D-01). It belongs to the INSTRUMENT collection, where light appears only where it does work, and the lime tick is the single accent FF uses across its own work.
Making factThe dial is printed as its own ring and turns on the knurled body; it is the dimmer, not a decoration.
The form
A low cylinder with fine vertical knurling around the body, a ring of light just below the dial, and a frosted disc on top. The 36 ticks are cut into the dial ring; the single lime tick tells you where you have set it.
In the room
At 7.7 cm tall, DIAL sits under a monitor, on a shelf between books or on a dressing table, and gives low, close light rather than lighting a room.
How it's made
The knurled body is easy to print cleanly; the dial is a separate ring that turns on the body. The light is a ready-made rechargeable LED module with a rotary dimmer and its own charge protection.
I build software and tools for a living, and I like objects that show you how they work. DIAL is that, in a lamp you can hold. — Fakhrul
